Teen Vacation Week: Glassblowing & Flameworking $750 Date(s)
Teens who are interested in working in a team atmosphere with a lot of physical activity will enjoy working in the glass blowing shop. Diablo's experienced instructors will guide teens through a series of demonstrations and hands-on exercises to build their understanding of the medium. There is a three students to one instructor ratio in the hot shop to ensure safety and plenty of individual instruction. First, students will learn basic glass manipulation by creating a paperweight. They will move on to learn how to introduce air into the piece to create a bubble. From there, students can make glasses and small vases. In the afternoon students will move into the Flame shop where teens will learn how to make beautiful glass beads using a stationary bench torch. They will be working on a mandrel, using soft glass to build colorful glass pieces. After a discussion of studio set-up and safety, demonstrations will introduce students to the use of heat and gravity to shape molten glass. Techniques such as dot application, marvering, stringers, annealing and bead cleaning, will all be covered.

This two day introduction to glass blowing will guide the first time student and students looking to brush-up on their skills, through the fundamentals of creating glass from the furnace, vocabulary, tools, and safety. You will then apply the color and blowing techniques learned to create your own colorful drinking glass.

Glassblowing Intensive - Hot Shop Date(s)
This intensive course will take students through a series of fundamental skills, which are crucial to working in the hot shop. While beginner students will be learning how to gather, form and control glass, and blow bubbles to make glasses and small vessels, intermediate student will be implementing Swedish and Venetian glass blowing techniques to create larger pieces with a variety of color applications, body wraps and raking. More advanced students will be learning variety of new techniques while improving their skill and solidifying the acquired knowledge.

The Swedish Bowl ($175) Date(s)
The Swedish Bowl is similar to the glass paperweight but students will be working with a blowpipe to add a hollow to their piece and then allowing the bubble to collapse creating a bowl shape in the center. This introductory class guides the first time glass artist through the most crucial skills. Students will learn how to gather glass from the furnace, how to shape and control, and how to apply color. In a fun and informative manner our instructors will introduce you to tools, safety and basic glass theory. Using either Moretti or Borosilicate glass, we will learn how to make several styles of marbles, such as complex twists, raked designs, and paperweight-style encased flowers. We will also learn techniques for encasing marbles in clear for a magnifying effect, and make glass stands for you to proudly display your creations.

Using Borosilicate glass, students will learn to shape and mold a variety of objects, including flowers, at a stationary bench torch. Sculptures will then be cased in clear glass to produce a pendant. The instructor will demonstrate techniques and then assist as each student works.

Students will explore solid and hollow shapes, and color and decoration techniques, while making objects like marbles, pendants, sculptures, ornaments, cups, small vases and more, using borosilicate glass (pyrex). Demonstrations and class discussions will alternate with plenty of hands-on work time available in an effort to make sure students get the most out of this course.
