Expert, individualized education.

"The dream begins, most of the time, with a teacher who believes in you, who tugs and pushes and leads you on to the next plateau, sometimes poking you with a sharp stick called truth."

—Dan Rather

The philosophy of One-on-One Tutoring focuses on the specific, unique needs of each student: we design an individualized education plan based on parents' insights about their child, input from teachers (when appropriate), and our understanding of the student's strengths and weaknesses. Tutoring can focus on enrichment for students who are already achieving at a high level, or on remediation for those who are struggling academically. With some students, we work briefly to fill in gaps or complete specific assignments (like preparation for SATs and ACTs or writing a college application essay); other students require ongoing support to gradually help them learn compensatory strategies and independence.

"Learning is not attained by chance, it must be sought for with ardor and attended to with diligence. ”

—Abigail Adams

We work with students from kindergarten through college in all academic subject areas. Areas of specialty include writing, reading comprehension and analysis, learning disabilities, middle and high-school sciences, math (through calculus), SAT and ACT preparation, and the college application essay.

"The greatest sign of success for a teacher... is to be able to say, ‘The children are now working as if I did not exist.’"

—Maria Montessori

All of our tutors have degrees in their areas; many have Master's degrees or Ph.D.'s, as well as teaching experience and training in working with learning disabilities.

"The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character—that is the goal of true education. ”

—Martin Luther King, Jr.

One-on-One Tutoring, Inc., was founded in 1991 by Jacqueline Gross, M.F.A., M.A.T.

"The principle goal of education is to create men [and women] who are capable of doing new things, not simply of repeating what other generations have done—men [and women] who are creative, inventive and discoverers. ”

—Jean Piaget
